The 4th Marine Division

The 4th Marine Division was organized from several different Marine Corps units in February of 1943. The unit shipped out to the Pacific after several months of intense training in the States. The 4th Marine Division suffered heavy casualties as it participated in four major amphibious landings. The 4th Division took part in the battles at Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. The 4th Marines were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation twice as well as the Navy Unit Commendation before its deactivation in 1945.
