The 6th Marine Division

The 6th Marine Division was organized in 1944 at Guadalcanal and was comprised in large part of Marines who were pulled from other Marine Divisions. Many of the men of the 6th Marine Division had combat experience upon the activation of the Striking Sixth. The men of the 6th Marine Division saw combat at Okinawa where they fought in engagements at both Sugar Loaf Hill and Yae-Take. The 6th Marine Division was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for its service in the Pacific. The 6th Division began preparation for the invasion of Japan prior to the end of the war.
