The 3rd Marine Division

The 3rd Marine Division was activated in 1942 with much of its original staff being transferred from the 2nd Marine Division. Nicknamed 'The Fighting Third', the 3rd Marine Division fought at the Battle of Bougainville in 1943 where they lost 400 Men Killed in Action. The 3rd Marine Division next saw action in the Battle of Guam, where the men of the Division killed over 5000 Japanese enemy combatants. The 3rd Division itself had nearly 4000 casualties at Guam. Thereafter the 3rd Marine Division participated in the battle for the island of Iwo Jima sustaining 6000 casualties in the fighting against enemy forces there. After the conclusion of fighting at Iwo Jima the 3rd Marine Division began preparing for the invasion of Japan before the surrender of the Japanese made this unnecessary.
