The 2nd Marine Division

The 2nd Marine Division was organized before the outbreak of the First World War. During the Great War the 2nd Marine Division participated in the battles of Aisne, Belleau Wood, Chateau Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Blanc Mont Ridge. The 2nd Marine Division, nicknamed 'The Silent Second', was transferred to American Samoa at the outbreak of hostilities during World War II.  The Marines of the 2nd Marine Division took part in the battles of Guadalcanal, Tawara, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. A portion of the Division actually occupied Nagasaki shortly after the nuclear strike on the Japanese city. For their participation in the attacks on the Gilbert Islands, the men of the 2nd Marine Division were awarded the Presidential Unit Citation   which cited their gallantry under fire.  To request the military service record of our 2nd Marine Division Veteran fill out a request form above.
