The 1st Marine Division

The 1st Marine Division, nicknamed 'The Old Breed', is the oldest of the active United States Marine Corps Divisions, having been initially formed in 1911. At the outbreak of the Second World War elements of the 1st Marine Division were dispersed across the Pacific Theater. Part of the 1st Marine Division participated in the attacks on Guadalcanal in 1942 thereafter being sent to Australia for rest and recuperation. The Marines of the 1st Marine Division then participated in the Battle of Peleliu  in which the 2nd Division suffered nearly 4000 casualties in just the first few days of fighting. The 2nd Marine Division's final campaign during the Second World War was the battle for the Island of Okinawa.  At Okinawa the Marines of the 1st Marine Division fought the Japanese at Dakeshi Ridge, Sugarloaf Hill and Shuri Castle among other engagements. After the surrender of the Japanese many components of the 1st Marine Division were sent to China where they provided security in areas of the country undergoing turbulent changes due to the repatriation of Japanese and Chinese citizens.
